Matthew Stafford is the current starting quarterback for the Detroit Lions. He was drafted by the Lions first overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. Stafford has led the Lions to six winning seasons and has thrown for over 4,000 yards in a season six times.
The team’s history
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit. Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929 as an independent professional team. For the 1930 season, the Spartans formally joined the NFL as the other area independents folded because of the Great Depression. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive financially and relocated to Detroit for the 1934 season. The Lions have won four NFL Championships, tied for 9th overall in total championships amongst all 32 NFL franchises; although they have not won an NFL title since 1957. The franchise has also experienced long periods of futility, mostly during the 1990s and 2000s. The team’s lack of success on the field has resulted in it having only two winning seasons (1991 and 1993) since 1993; however, it has still managed to sell out every home game since 2002.(from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Lions)
