History

The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit. Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929 as an independent professional team. For the 1930 season, the Spartans formally joined the NFL as the other area independents failed to generate significant interest. Despite success within NFL competition, they could not survive financially and relocated to Detroit for the 1934 season.

The Lions have won four NFL Championships (1935, 1952, 1953, 1957). They played in ten championship games before the Super Bowl era (1932, 1934, 1935, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1970), and four more since encountering many of their former rivals throughout those seasons in said Super Bowls (16 appearances:They lost all but one). The franchise has also experienced long periods of struggle. Between 1989–93, for instance during which time they became synonymous with losing by going 31-84-1 under ten head coaches; from 2001 until 2016 when they became a league doormat with a combined 80-240 record; and most recently between 2007 and 2010 when they became infamous for becoming the first team ever to finish 0-16. The Lions hold multiple NFL records including having merged with another NFL franchise (the Dallas Texans) thus far being only one of two franchises to have done so twice (the other being the Cleveland Browns), have played host to Thanksgiving Day football games more often than any other team (an annual tradition since 1934 with exception of 1939–1944 due to WWII),and becoming America’s Thanksgiving Traditionalists by way of their annual holiday games.

The franchise has also experienced long periods of futility, mostly during the 1950s and 1960s; they have only made two playoff appearances since winning their last championship in 1957 and have suffered some of the worst record-setting losses in NFL history. During this time, they were known as the Hapless Lions or Fools’Tokens, due to their notoriously low finish in the standings and lack of postseason success.
